The Simons Foundation has awarded funding for a 5-year international collaboration in computational mathematics between researchers at University of Sydney (led by John Voight) and researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (led by Andrew V. Sutherland).
The AUD$6.9 million project will expand the capabilities of Magma, a computer algebra system, originally developed at Sydney (led by John Cannon). With a large user base of mathematicians and computer scientists worldwide, Magma provides a mathematically rigorous environment with a vast library of algorithms, allowing researchers to explore a wide array of mathematical structures. SMRI Director Geordie Williamson expressed his delight at the show of support for the Magma project by the Simon’s foundation. The proposal seeks to expand the frontier of computation in pure mathematics, funding research positions at both The University of Sydney and MIT, as well as conferences and travel for visiting scientists.
