International Women in Mathematics Day at the University of Sydney
Celebrating women mathematicians at SMRI
The University of Sydney’s School of Mathematics & Statistics hosted an in-person and online event to celebrate Women in Mathematics Day on 12 May, sponsored by SMRI and the University of Sydney.
The event began with a video screening of ‘Secrets of the Surface’, featuring Fields Medallist Maryam Mirzakhani. This was followed by an exhibition of Australian Women in Mathematics, an artistic and scientific project on women mathematicians in the 21st century, and a compilation video produced by SMRI to celebrating our staff and visitors.
The video shares the stories of three inspiring women mathematicians: SMRI postdoctoral researcher Dr Anna Romanov (now a postdoc at UNSW Sydney), future international visitor Dr Nancy Scherich, and 2021 domestic visitor Associate Professor Bronwyn Hajek.
