Nonlinear PDEs and applications
The goal of this special semester is to bring together mathematicians with diverse expertise in nonlinear PDEs and their applications. The program will connect researchers working across fields, including geometric PDEs, fully nonlinear equations, calculus of variations, and free boundary problems. A central theme will be the study of existence and regularity of solutions to nonlinear PDEs and the formation and structure of their singularities. The semester will promote the exchange of analytical, variational, and geometric methods and help to identify new research directions. Particular emphasis will be placed on interactions among different approaches to nonlinear PDEs and on problems where techniques developed in one setting can be used in different settings.
Two conferences will form the focal points of the semester:
- the opening conference on fully nonlinear PDEs, held in honour of Neil Trudinger’s 85th birthday
- the closing conference on geometric variational problems
Between the two conferences, the program will feature regular activities, including mini-courses, seminars, and workshops.
Program Goals
- To Bring together researchers in nonlinear PDEs and related areas to identify key problems and directions
- To foster collaboration among researchers at different career stages
- To promote informal scientific exchanges made possible by a semester-long program
- To explain, digest, and assimilate new ideas and methods emerging rapidly from recent advances in artificial intelligence in mathematics
- To provide focused conferences and opportunities for broader scientific interaction

SMRI Fellowships
SMRI Fellowships enable participation in the program for underrepresented, emerging, or internationally renowned researchers. The initiative aims to promote greater equity in the mathematical sciences, contributing to the development of a more inclusive and representative global research community, and enabling talented individuals to contribute to, and benefit from, SMRI’s strong research ecosystem.
SMRI Fellowship applications for 2027 close on 30th November 2026
